Key Features
- Foliage: Medium to dark green leaves, glossy, oval-shaped, and often toothed. Evergreen in warm climates, they are deciduous or semi-deciduous in cold conditions.
- Flowering: Large, showy flowers, often single or double, with delicate petals and prominent centres. Colours vary enormously (red, orange, pink, yellow, white, bi-colour, etc.). Generous blooming from spring to fall, and even year-round in tropical climates.
- Habit: Upright, bushy, and branching shrub, which can be grown in pots.
- Growth: Fast under optimal conditions.
- Appeal: Main attraction for its exotic flowers and vibrant colours.
Care Tips
- Light: Requires full sun for abundant and continuous flowering (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). Can tolerate light partial shade, but flowering will be less spectacular.
- Watering: Water generously and regularly during the growing season (spring, summer, early fall), keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. A good quality potting mix for tropical plants or shrubs is ideal.
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high ambient humidity. Regular misting or using a pebble tray can be beneficial indoors or during dry weather.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, between 18°C and 32°C (64°F and 90°F). Sensitive to cold; does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C (50°F). Must be brought indoors before the first frosts in Quebec.
- Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize every two weeks with a fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus (for flowering), or a balanced fertilizer, diluted according to instructions.
- Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage a compact shape and abundant flowering. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
- Overwintering : Since it is not hardy here, hibiscus is often grown in pots and brought indoors before frost. Place it in a bright, cool location, reduce watering, and suspend fertilization.
