The 'Chinook Sunrise' rose is an award-winning introduction from Vineland's 49th Parallel Collection, designed for Canadian gardeners. This shrub captures the beauty of a sunrise with its warm, changing flower colours. It combines abundant flowering and excellent hardiness with simple care, making it a choice addition to any landscape.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: The plant develops glossy, dark green deciduous foliage. In the spring, new shoots emerge in a rich burgundy hue, adding early-season interest.
  • Flowering: It produces successive flushes, from July to September, of bouquets of 4-7 semi-double, lightly scented flowers. The blooms display a captivating mix of colours reminiscent of a sunrise: shades of coral, salmon-orange, and pale pink with a yellow stamen center.
  • Light: It demands full sun (6+ hours) to produce abundant flowering and maintain a dense habit.
  • Habit: It forms a compact shrub with an upright, vase-shaped habit that is well-branched.
  • Growth: It shows a good growth rate, especially if pruned annually. It reaches a height and spread of about 90 to 120 cm (3-4 feet).
  • Moisture: It requires average watering to get established and during dry spells.
  • Soil: It thrives in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil, but also adapts well to both clay and sandy soils.
  • Hardiness: Exceptionally hardy, it faces Zone 3 winters. A good snow cover protects it from winter damage.
  • Watering: Once established, it tolerates drought well.
  • Resistance: It possesses excellent resistance to black spot, which simplifies its cultivation. It suckers very little.

Uses

  • Types of Use: Its medium size and elegant habit make it ideal for beds, as a specimen, or in mass plantings for a colourful effect.
  • Ornamental Features: Its warm, changing flower colours offer a dynamic show all summer long. The glossy, healthy foliage contributes to the plant's beauty, even outside the blooming period.

Care

  • Fertilizing: Apply a rose fertilizer in the spring. A mulch at the base of the plant helps to conserve moisture and protect the roots.
  • Pruning: In early spring, prune the shrub to about 15-25 cm (6-10 inches) from the ground. This pruning removes dead tips and encourages a dense shape and generous flowering. Deadheading faded flowers during the summer promotes faster reblooming.
  • Planting: Choose a sunny location that is protected from cold north and west winds.
