The Cocos nucifera, commonly known as the Coconut Palm, brings an irresistible exotic touch to any indoor space. This majestic palm, an emblem of tropical beaches, sprouts directly from a coconut visible at the surface of the pot. Its primary appeal lies in its large, vibrant green fronds that instantly evoke holidays and tropical serenity.
Characteristics
- Foliage: Large, pinnate fronds, rigid and arched, showing a brilliant bright green colour.
- Flowering: Flowering remains extremely rare, if not non-existent, when grown indoors.
- Light: Requires intense, bright light. Several hours of direct sunlight daily is essential to maintain its vigour.
- Habit: Upright and slender, with fronds spreading gracefully from the top of the central stem.
- Growth: Its growth rate is slow indoors, where it rarely reaches more than 1.5 to 2.5 metres in height.
- Humidity: Demands high ambient humidity. A dry atmosphere quickly causes the leaf tips to turn brown and dry out.
- Soil: Requires a light, highly porous, and perfectly drained substrate, such as a mix of indoor potting soil and coarse sand.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm rooms, ideally between 18°C and 24°C, and must never be exposed to temperatures below 15°C.
- Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist, without ever letting water stagnate at the bottom of the saucer.
- Hardiness Zone: Strictly tropical plant, grown exclusively indoors year-round.
Use
- Ideal as an accent plant in a large living room, bright office, or sunroom.
- Perfect for structuring large spaces thanks to its vertical architectural habit.
- Brings an exotic and modern visual signature to contemporary decors.
Maintenance
- Fertilisation: Apply a balanced fertilizer for indoor plants or palms once a month from spring until the end of summer.
- Pruning: Only cut the lower fronds when they turn completely brown and dry, close to the trunk.
- Repotting: Perform this operation in spring only when the roots fill the entire pot, taking care not to bury the coconut.
- Propagation: Propagates only through the germination of a fresh coconut, a lengthy process that requires consistent bottom heat.
