Characteristics
- Foliage : The large, oval, and glossy leaves of Calathea 'Rusco' are true works of art. They display a silvery background delicately tinged with pink, framed by a wide, dark green border and underlined with a thin white edging, creating a striking effect of natural painting. The underside of the leaves reveals a magnificent purple hue.
- Bloom : While Calatheas can bloom, it is rare to see flowers on plants grown indoors. Calathea 'Rusco' is mainly appreciated for its decorative foliage.
- Light : Calathea 'Rusco' prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn its leaves and cause its colours to fade.
- Habit : Its habit is upright, making it an ideal plant for shelves, desks, or plant stands.
- Growth : It typically reaches a height and spread of 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches), making it a medium-sized houseplant.
- Humidity : As a tropical plant, Calathea 'Rusco' needs high humidity. Mist the foliage regularly, use a humidifier, or place the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
- Soil : A light potting mix, rich in organic matter and well-draining, is ideal.
- Temperature : Calathea 'Rusco' prefers warm and stable temperatures between 18°C and 27°C (64°F and 80°F). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
- Watering : Likes consistently moist but not soggy soil. Water regularly, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Use lukewarm, non-calcareous water.
Uses
- Types of Use : Perfect for adding a touch of elegance and colour to your interior. Ideal for living spaces, offices, or bedrooms.
- Decorative Advantages : Its foliage with graphic patterns and contrasting colours makes it a true decorative centerpiece. It is also known for its air-purifying properties.
Care
- Fertilization : Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer for houseplants, diluted by half, once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Pruning : Simply cut away yellow or brown leaves at the base to keep the plant healthy and encourage new growth.
- Repotting : Repot every 1 to 2 years in the spring, into a slightly larger pot, when the roots become too cramped.
- Propagation : Propagation can be done by division of the rhizomes during repotting in the spring.
