Bring a touch of the exotic to your indoor and outdoor décor with the majestic Majesty Palm! Native to the shores of Madagascar, this non-hardy tropical palm will add lush elegance to your terrace in summer and a warm ambiance to your interior in winter.
To enjoy its beauty, however, you need to be aware of its needs. It requires a good balance of light, humidity, and fertilization to ensure good and beautiful growth.
Outdoor Acclimatization: If you want to place it on your terrace or patio, gradually acclimate it to direct sunlight during the first two weeks. Sudden exposure could cause burns on its leaves.
Summer Care (Terrace)
- Location: Place the palm in a sunny to partially shaded location, sheltered from strong winds. It will need as much light as possible. The more it is exposed to light, the more you need to make sure the soil stays moist, otherwise the leaves will burn.
- Watering: Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which could cause root rot. It likes to have evenly moist, but not soggy, soil. Remember to mist it regularly to recreate the humidity of its natural environment.
- Soil: Opt for a rich and well-drained mix, ideally composed of soil for acid-loving plants and soil for tropical plants. This will ensure a cool and fertile soil, conducive to its growth.
- Fertilizer: No need to overfeed it! One to two applications of fertilizer during the growing season is sufficient. In winter, let it rest without fertilizer.
- Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the palm.
Winter Care (Indoor)
- Location: Move the palm indoors before the first frost. Place it in a bright location, ideally near a south-facing window.
- Watering: Reduce watering frequency in winter, as the plant goes dormant. Water enough to keep the soil slightly moist.
- Humidity: Increase ambient humidity by placing a tray filled with pebbles and water under the pot, or by using a humidifier.
- Temperature: Maintain an ambient temperature between 15°C and 20°C.
Precautions
- Watch for pests such as mealybugs and spider mites.
- Avoid cold drafts that could damage the leaves.
