Magnolia Royal Star, a charming variety of Magnolia stellata, which is appreciated for its compact shape. This deciduous shrub or small tree emerges in spring with pale pink buds, then unveiling exceptionally large pure white flowers, up to 15 cm in diameter, each fragrant and composed of 25 to 30 tepals, creating the characteristic starry effect. Leafless branches give way to new medium green leaves. Hardier and faster growing than most, 'Royal Star' blooms up to 10 days earlier, although its flowers are sensitive to late frosts. With fragrant flowering in May, dark green foliage and slow growth, it prefers soils rich in organic matter, but requires winter protection. Light pruning can be done after flowering if necessary, but is generally not necessary. Avoid in a southern exposure.
