Walker's Low catmint transforms borders and beds into a refreshing carpet of colour with its incredibly long and generous flowering season. Starting in late spring, this dynamic groundcover deploys countless spikes of a vibrant bluish-purple that succeed one another without interruption until the first frosts. Its aromatic grayish-green foliage releases a pleasant fragrance at the slightest touch, while demonstrating exemplary resistance to pests. Ideal for clothing low walls, edging pathways, or structuring rock gardens, it courageously withstands heat and drought once well established.
Characteristics
- Foliage : Deciduous, small, scalloped, and textured leaves. They display a distinctive grayish-green hue and release a pronounced aromatic fragrance when crushed.
- Flowering / Fruiting / Stems : Multitude of long, upright spikes packed with small, tubular, deep lavender-blue to purple flowers. The blossoms open continuously from late May until October.
- Light : Requires full sun to offer its most intense colouration and maintain a compact habit, but tolerates light afternoon shade.
- Habit : Bushy, spreading, and beautifully rounded, forming a dense mound whose arched stems cascade gracefully over the sides.
- Growth : Fast, reaching a height of 60 cm to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) and a similar spread.
- Soil : Adapts to a wide variety of soils, provided they are well-drained. Prefers light soils and dreads excess stagnant moisture in winter.
- Temperature : Specify hardiness in zone 3.
- Resistances : Naturally repels White-tailed deer as well as Hare and rabbit thanks to its aromatic oils. Offers remarkable tolerance to urban drought and heat.
Use
- Types of use : Ideal in mass plantings, along pathways, in rock gardens, or as a groundcover to stabilize a slope. Perfect for growing in containers on sunny patios.
- Decorative advantages : Creates a striking texture contrast alongside roses and dark-foliaged perennials. Softens rigid structures like stone walls thanks to its supple, cascading habit.
Maintenance
- Watering : Water regularly during the first year following planting. Once the root system is well established, let the soil dry out between interventions; the plant treats drought very well.
- Fertilization : Apply a rich compost or a balanced granular fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excess nitrogen which stimulates foliage growth at the expense of stem rigidity.
- Pruning : Shear back the clump vigorously by two-thirds after the first major flush of flowers in July. This action stimulates the appearance of fresh, compact foliage and triggers a massive new bloom for autumn.
- Planting : Maintain a spacing of 60 cm to 75 cm between plants to allow them to develop fully without crowding. Avoid burying the crown of the plant.
- Winter Protection : Leave the dry stems in place in autumn to naturally protect the crown from cold. No other artificial winter protection is required due to its excellent natural hardiness.
