The Electric Love™ Weigela is a shrub that produces a true shock of colour in the garden. This variety's main benefit is its electric contrast between intensely dark foliage and a striking, bright red bloom. Its ultra-compact habit makes it a perfect solution for adding dramatic impact in small spaces, borders, or patio pots, without requiring much maintenance.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: It develops very dense deciduous foliage. The leaves display a bronze-green colour so dark it appears almost black, creating a spectacular backdrop for the flowers.
  • Flowering: From early to late summer, the shrub covers itself in trumpet-shaped, very intense, lipstick-red flowers. This abundant bloom stands out spectacularly against the dark foliage and attracts hummingbirds.
  • Light: It demands full sun to develop its most intense foliage and flower colours.
  • Habit: It forms a very compact, dense, and rounded bushy habit.
  • Growth: With a medium growth rate, this dwarf weigela reaches a height of 30 to 60 cm (1-2 feet) with a spread of 60 to 90 cm (2-3 feet).
  • Soil: It thrives in average, well-drained garden soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy, it faces Zone 4 winters without any problem.
  • Resistance: It demonstrates good resistance to deer.

Uses

  • Types of Use: Its dwarf size makes it exceptional for growing in containers, at the front of borders, for edging, or in foreground mass plantings.
  • Ornamental Features: It offers one of the strongest contrasts you can find in a shrub, with its duo of black foliage and red flowers. It brings a bold and modern touch of colour.

Care

  • Watering: Water regularly, especially the first year and during dry spells, to keep the soil moist.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in early spring.
  • Pruning: To encourage continuous blooming, lightly prune the shrub just after its first wave of flowers in early summer.
  • Planting: Choose a location in full sun to get the best colour impact.
  • Winter Protection: No special protection is generally required in Zone 4, but a mulch at the base can help young plants.
