Pruning Guide: For Maximum Blooms
Identify your variety's group to know when and how to prune:
- Group 1 (Early Flowering): These bloom on old wood. Do not prune them, except to remove dead stems after spring flowering.
- Group 2 (Large-Flowered): These often offer two flushes of blooms. Perform a light pruning early in the spring by removing dead wood and cutting stems back to a vigorous bud.
- Group 3 (Summer/Autumn Flowering): The most vigorous! These bloom on new wood. Cut all stems back severely to about 30 cm from the ground in early spring.
Growing Tips for Total Success
To obtain an abundant bloom, follow the golden rule: « Feet in the shade, head in the sun. »
- Expose to sun: Choose a sunny spot (at least 6 hours of sun).
- Protect the base: Plant perennials at the base or install thick mulch to keep roots cool.
- Prepare the soil: Use rich, loose, and well-drained soil.
- Install a support: Secure a trellis or solid structure at the time of planting.
