The Dakota Pinnacle® Birch is the elegant solution for tight spaces. This remarkable tree is distinguished by its narrow columnar habit, bringing all the classic beauty of a birch—white bark, delicate foliage, and golden fall colour—in a vertical silhouette perfect for modern gardens, privacy screens, or allees. In addition to its unique form, it was selected for its excellent resistance to the dreaded Bronze Birch Borer, a major asset for a long-lasting investment.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: Deciduous, dense, glossy dark green foliage in summer, composed of diamond-shaped leaves. It turns a brilliant and uniform golden-yellow in the fall.
  • Flowering / Bark: Long, drooping catkins typical of birches appear in the spring. Its main appeal, besides its form, is its bark which matures to a pure, papery white.
  • Light: Prefers full sun for best growth and a more vibrant fall colour, but tolerates part shade.
  • Habit: Adopts a fastigiate, narrowly columnar, and dense habit. It naturally maintains its vertical form without requiring formative pruning.
  • Growth: Fast-growing, it can reach a height of 8 to 12 metres, with a spread of only 2 to 3 metres, which makes it exceptional.
  • Soil: Adapts well to various soil types, including heavy soils, but prefers cool, well-drained soil for optimal performance.
  • Temperature: Developed in North Dakota, it is exceptionally hardy and perfectly adapted to Canadian climatic conditions.
  • Resistance: Shows excellent resistance to the Bronze Birch Borer, a considerable advantage over many other white-barked birches.

Use

  • Types of Use: Ideal for small gardens, as a vertical accent tree, in a row along a driveway, or planted in a group to create a narrow and elegant privacy screen.
  • Decorative Advantages: Its unique columnar form creates a strong architectural focal point in the landscape. The white bark offers striking winter interest, and its golden-yellow fall colour is magnificent.

Care

  • Watering: Water regularly and deeply during the first few years to encourage a good root system. Applying a mulch at its base will help keep the soil cool.
  • Fertilization: Fertilizing in the spring with a balanced fertilizer can be beneficial in the first few years, but is generally not necessary thereafter.
  • Pruning: No formative pruning is required. Only prune to remove dead or damaged branches in late winter.
  • Planting: Plant in spring or fall. Ensure the tree's root collar is not buried deeper than it was in its pot.
  • Winter Protection: No winter protection is necessary.
