A climbing plant in nature, but often used as a trailing plant, it can reach up to 6 m high, magnificent on a trellis. It has tough, flexible pinkish-brown stems that are bare of leaves as they begin to grow. These will appear later, with their pinkish tint. The Hoya will like intense or medium light to flower. However, it should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as there is a risk of burning its leaves. The soil should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings, even more so when it is resting. It produces flowers in umbels of 10 to 20 pink star flowers. They are strongly scented, especially at night. Only mature plants at least 5 years old will flower.
