Essence Purple English lavender transforms any outdoor space into a peaceful aromatic haven with its early and exceptionally prolonged blooming season. This compact variety smothers itself in a profusion of vibrant violet-blue spikes that stand proudly above a dense dôme of silvery foliage. It releases an enveloping fragrance starting in early summer and maintains its neat, rounded silhouette throughout the seasons, while demonstrating excellent tolerance to harsh winters and hot, dry summers.
Characteristics
- Foliage : Displays fine, linear leaves of a grayish-green to silvery hue. This highly aromatic foliage remains semi-persistent, retaining its elegant coloration through most of the year.
- Blooming / Fruiting / Stems : Produces a bounty of intense purple-violet flower spikes carried on straight, sturdy stems. The flowers open as early as June and continuously renew themselves.
- Light Requirements : Requires full sun to reach maximum color intensity and ensure a profuse bloom.
- Habit : Features a rounded, bushy, and very compact shape, forming a highly uniform cushion.
- Growth : Shows a moderate growth rate, reaching a mature height and spread of approximately 45 cm.
- Soil : Thrives in poor, gravelly, and loose soil, but demands perfect drainage above all else.
- Temperature : Displays excellent hardiness, classified in zone 5.
- Resistances : Naturally deters White-tailed deer as well as hare and rabbit due to its potent essential oils, while showing great tolerance to temporary drought once fully established.
Use
- Types of use : Integrates beautifully along pathway borders, in rock gardens, or within perennial beds. It also proves ideal for container gardening on patios, decks, or balconies.
- Ornamental advantages : Structures the garden with its textured silvery foliage and creates a striking color contrast when paired with bright pink or yellow flowering plants. Its blooms make superb fresh or dried bouquets.
Maintenance
- Watering : Water regularly after planting to promote deep root establishment. Reduce watering significantly afterward, as this perennial thrives in dry soil and suffers from excess moisture which causes root rot.
- Fertilization : Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Apply a light layer of compost in spring or a low-analysis fertilizer on the surface if necessary.
- Pruning : Prune lightly after the first flush of flowers to stimulate continuous reblooming. Cut the plant back by one-third in early spring to maintain a tight habit and prevent the base from becoming too woody.
- Planting : Install the plant in a well-drained hole, adding sand or gravel if the surrounding soil is heavy. Maintain a spacing of about 45 cm between plants.
- Winter Protection : Install a winter protection or ensure a reliable snow cover in colder regions to shield the foliage from drying winter winds.
