Easy to grow, these plants are both beautiful and functional, adding a touch of greenery and pleasant scents to your environment.

Please note that the specific selection of plants may vary from one Botanix garden centre to another.

Plants included in the selection:

Pelargonium graveolens 'Citrosa' (Citronella Geranium)

Highly aromatic foliage when crushed, releasing a citronella scent known to repel mosquitoes. Bushy habit, ideal for containers. Cultivated as an annual or houseplant.

Eucalyptus citriodora (Lemon Eucalyptus)

Tree or large shrub with blue-green foliage that emits a strong lemon scent when crushed. Cultivated as an annual or houseplant.

Mentha spicata (Spearmint/Peppermint)

Very vigorous perennial aromatic plant with a fresh, minty scent. Its smell is unpleasant to many insects. Zone 3-9. Very hardy.

Pyrethrum (Tanacetum coccineum / Painted Daisy)

This is a vibrant, herbaceous perennial, also known as the Painted Daisy. Beyond its beauty, the Painted Daisy is renowned for naturally producing pyrethrins, which act as a natural insect repellent against certain insects. Zone 4-9.

Ruta graveolens (Rue)

Perennial plant with blue-grey foliage and a strong, distinctive odor that many insects avoid. Handle with caution (may cause skin irritation in some people). Zone 4-8.

Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ (Munstead Lavender)

Very fragrant and compact perennial lavender, producing spikes of purple flowers. Its scent is much loved by humans but repels mosquitoes and other insects. Zone 4-9.

General Growing Conditions:

Exposure: Most of these plants prefer full sun for maximum production of their essential oils. Partial shade is tolerated for some.

Soil: Prefer well-drained soil. Quality potting mix for containers or amended, well-drained garden soil is ideal.

Watering: Water regularly, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.

Fertilization: A balanced fertilizer application during the growing season can promote dense, fragrant foliage.

Uses in the Garden:

  • Pots and planters: Ideal for patios, balconies, and windowsills where their fragrance can be enjoyed.
  • Borders and beds: Create fragrant barriers around resting areas or dining areas.
  • Near entrances: To deter insects before they enter the house.
  • Vegetable garden: Some can act as repellents for specific garden pests (check companion planting).

To maximize the effectiveness of this selection, strategically place the plants around your outdoor living areas. Lightly crush the leaves of certain plants (like Pelargonium or Lemon Eucalyptus) to release their fragrance more intensely. Combine different species for an enhanced repellent effect and a diversity of scents and textures. Consider bringing annuals (Pelargonium, Eucalyptus) indoors before the first frost if you wish to keep them as houseplants.
