Our selection of African Violets (Saintpaulia ionantha) offers a charming variety of colours to brighten up your home. These small plants, presented in 10 cm pots, are perfect for windowsills, shelves, or as thoughtful little gifts. With their fuzzy leaves and lovely flowers in shades of purple, pink, white, and sometimes even bi-colours, they bring a touch of sweetness and colour to any room. Easy to care for, African Violets are an excellent option for beginners and plant lovers who appreciate continuous blooming.
Key Features
- Foliage: Oval, fuzzy leaves, medium to dark green, forming a basal rosette.
- Habit: Compact, rosette.
- Growth: Moderate, blooms several times a year if conditions are right.
- Care: Easy to moderate, requires particular attention to watering.
- Flowering: Long and abundant, with single or double flowers in a variety of colours including purple, pink, white, red, and bi-colour combinations.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight that can burn the leaves, except during the winter months when a south-facing window can be beneficial to give them a little more direct light. African Violets also thrive under artificial light, such as an LED grow light designed for plant growth.
- Watering: Watering is crucial for African Violets. It is best to water from the bottom by placing the pot in a saucer of water for about 15-20 minutes, then allowing the excess water to drain away. You can also water gently from the top, being careful to avoid wetting the leaves to prevent spotting. Use room temperature water. Allow the top inch of the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Soil: A potting mix specifically formulated for African Violets is recommended, as it offers good drainage and adequate aeration.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate ambient humidity. Too low humidity can lead to brown leaf edges and reduced blooming.
- Temperature: Normal room temperature, between 18°C and 24°C (64°F and 75°F). Avoid cold drafts and significant temperature fluctuations.
- Fertilization: Fertilize lightly every two to four weeks during the blooming period with a balanced liquid fertilizer for indoor plants or a fertilizer specifically designed for African Violets, diluted according to the instructions.
