The Canadian Shield® rose, a pillar of the 49th Parallel Collection, proudly bears its name. Developed for the Canadian climate, it offers exceptional performance and resilience. This shrub combines the beauty of a classic rose with foolproof hardiness, blooming profusely without requiring complex care.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: The plant develops very shiny, dark green deciduous foliage, which beautifully showcases the red flowers and demonstrates excellent health all season long.
  • Flowering: It produces continuously and profusely, from early summer until frost, clusters of large, vivid scarlet-red flowers. Each very double flower (over 40 petals) releases a light fragrance. Furthermore, it is self-cleaning, which greatly simplifies maintenance.
  • Light: It demands full sun to deliver its most spectacular bloom.
  • Habit: It forms a bushy shrub with an upright, rounded habit that is dense and well-balanced.
  • Growth: Slow. It reaches a height of 1.2 to 1.5 m and a spread of 1 to 1.2 m.
  • Moisture: It prefers average to cool moisture conditions.
  • Soil: It thrives in well-drained soil.
  • Hardiness: Exceptionally hardy, it tolerates temperatures down to -40°C (Zone 3), making it a perfect choice for harsh winters.
  • Watering: It requires occasional watering when the soil becomes dry, especially while getting established.
  • Resistance: It possesses remarkable resistance to black spot and other common rose diseases.

Uses

  • Types of Use: Extremely versatile, it integrates beautifully into beds, borders, and foundation plantings. It can be used in mass plantings for maximum impact or as a unique specimen.
  • Ornamental Features: Its classic, full, and abundant red flowers ensure a constant display of colour all season long. The glossy foliage adds a touch of elegance. Its flowers are also perfect for cutting.

Care

  • Fertilizing: Apply a rose fertilizer in the spring to support its generous growth and flowering.
  • Pruning: Its maintenance is minimal. Simply prune it in early spring or fall to give it the desired shape. Deadheading is not necessary.
  • Planting: Choose a very sunny location with good air circulation.
