Hydrangea macrophylla KIMONO™ from Bloomin'Easy® is a spectacular shrub that will captivate all eyes with its unique and abundant blooming. Its magnificent bi-colour flowers, a deep wine-red with a vibrant creamy white centre, contrast superbly with its dark brown foliage. With a compact habit and remarkably easy to care for, this hydrangea is a perfect addition to any garden looking for a touch of refined elegance and lasting colour.
Characteristics
- Foliage : The foliage is deciduous, a distinctive dark brown, offering a striking contrast with the light flowers and adding visual interest even before blooming.
- Bloom : Produces abundant spherical inflorescences (flower heads) with a long bloom time, from early summer until fall. Each flower is a bi-colour masterpiece: a rich wine-red on the outer edge with a vibrant creamy white centre. The colour can be slightly influenced by soil pH, but the bi-colour contrast remains stable.
- Light : Prefers part shade to partial shade, where it receives morning sun and is protected from intense afternoon sun. Too much sun can burn the foliage and fade the colours.
- Habit : Its habit is compact and bushy, forming a dense and harmonious clump. It is ideal for small spaces or containers.
- Growth : Its growth is moderate. It reaches a height and spread of approximately 0.9 to 1.2 metres (3 to 4 feet) at maturity.
- Humidity : Requires consistently moist but well-drained soil. Regular moisture is crucial for abundant blooming and to prevent foliage wilting.
- Soil : Prefers rich, fertile, and well-drained soil. Soil amended with organic matter is ideal. Soil pH can slightly influence flower hues, but the bi-colour characteristic remains.
- Temperature : Good hardiness for our climate. For colder regions, winter protection is recommended (mulch, wind protection) to ensure good blooming on old wood.
- Watering : Watering is important. Water regularly and deeply, especially during hot and dry periods, or if grown in containers. Don't let the soil dry out completely.
Uses
- Types of Use : A perfect addition to mass plantings, flower bed borders, as a specimen plant to attract attention, or grown in large containers on patios and balconies. Ideal for cottage-style gardens or to add a touch of contemporary elegance.
- Decorative Advantages : Its unique and striking bi-colour blooms create a strong and sophisticated visual impact. The contrast with its dark brown foliage is a major asset, offering continuous visual interest and transforming the space with its rich colours.
Care
- Fertilization : Fertilize in spring with a balanced shrub fertilizer or a specific hydrangea fertilizer. Additional fertilization in summer can support prolonged blooming.
- Pruning : It's an easy-care shrub. Pruning is minimal and should be done in early spring, removing dead or damaged wood. If you wish to shape the plant, prune lightly after summer blooming.
- Planting :
- Distance : Space plants approximately 0.9 to 1.2 metres (3 to 4 feet) apart to allow for their full development.
- Depth : Plant the root ball at the same level as the soil in the original container.
- Period : Spring or fall are the best times for planting.
