Get ready for unmatched performance with Petunia Supertunia Vista® Bubblegum, often dubbed "The Best Petunia. Period.®"! This award-winning Proven Winners cultivar boasts exceptional vigour, forming impressive floral masses that can reach up to 60 cm (2 feet) in height and trail over your containers by more than 1.2 metres (4 feet). Ideal for landscape beds and large containers, it offers abundant, continuous pink blooms from planting time until hard autumn frosts.
Characteristics
- Foliage : The foliage is green, medium-sized, dense, and attractive, serving as a perfect backdrop for the flowers.
- Bloom : Produces a multitude of medium-sized pink flowers that completely cover the plant. Blooming is continuous and exceptionally long, extending from planting until hard autumn frosts, with no deadheading required (self-cleaning). It blooms earlier and longer than other petunias, lasting well into late fall in moderate climates.
- Light : Prefers full sun (more than 6 hours of direct sun) but tolerates partial shade (4 to 6 hours of direct sun). Maximum sun exposure is essential for optimal performance.
- Habit : Its habit is very vigorous, mounding, and trailing (spilling). It can reach 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches) in height in landscape beds and trail up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) in hanging baskets or planters. It's excellent as both a filler and spiller plant.
- Growth : This is the most vigorous of the Supertunia Vista® series. It is high-growing, pushing taller and wider than other petunias, quickly filling large areas or big containers.
- Humidity : Requires average soil moisture. It is drought-tolerant once established. However, for maximum performance, especially in containers, consistent watering is preferred.
- Soil : Adapts well to average fertility, well-drained soil.
- Temperature : Extremely heat tolerant, this annual thrives in warm climates. It is very resistant to high temperatures and continues to bloom even in very hot weather.
- Watering : Average water needs. It is drought-tolerant. For optimal results, especially in containers, regular watering with a soluble fertilizer is recommended.
Uses
- Types of Use : Incredibly versatile, it's ideal for landscape beds, large planters, hanging baskets, window boxes, patio containers (where it acts as a filler and spiller), borders, and as groundcover. It's perfect for creating a "wall-to-wall" effect of pink flowers throughout the season.
- Decorative Advantages : Its massive and continuous bloom of vibrant pink creates a spectacular visual impact that draws the eye from afar. Its robustness, disease resistance, and self-cleaning nature make it a consistently impeccable plant that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Care
- Fertilization : An annual application of fertilizer or compost for garden beds, and regular fertilization (e.g., every 1 to 2 weeks) for container plants, will ensure the best possible flowering performance.
- Pruning : Deadheading is not necessary as the plant is self-cleaning. You can lightly trim plants with scissors to shape them if desired, or if blooming decreases in very hot weather. This will increase branching and flowering when temperatures cool.
- Planting : Space plants 46 to 81 cm (18 to 32 inches) apart to allow for good spread and optimal filling. Plant the root ball at the same level as the soil in the original container. Plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed, when the soil is well warmed.
