'Rozanne' Geranium (Geranium 'Gerwat' ROZANNE) is one of the most popular and best-performing perennials in the world, famous for its exceptionally long blooming period. The secret to its endurance? Its flowers are sterile, which pushes the plant to produce new ones non-stop, from spring until frost. It forms an attractive mound of foliage that covers itself in brilliant violet-blue flowers, an easy and essential addition to any garden.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: It develops a dense mound of foliage, dark green and lightly marbled with chartreuse. The deeply lobed leaves create an interesting texture.
  • Flowering: It produces a profusion of large (up to 5 cm), saucer-shaped, luminous violet-blue flowers with a distinctive white eye and fine purple veins. The bloom is continuous from late spring to mid-fall.
  • Light: It thrives in full sun, which guarantees the best flowering, but also adapts well to a location in partial shade.
  • Habit: It forms a wide, spreading mound (rounded habit). A single vigorous plant can cover a good amount of ground in one season.
  • Growth: With a medium growth rate, it reaches a height of 45 to 50 cm (18-20 inches) with a spread of 45 to 60 cm (18-24 inches).
  • Moisture: It prefers soil with average moisture conditions.
  • Soil: It adapts to a wide range of soils (clay, loam, sand), as long as they are well-drained.
  • Hardiness: Hardy, it faces Zone 4 winters without any problem. It tolerates summer heat well.
  • Watering: Once established, it demonstrates some drought tolerance, but regular watering during dry periods promotes continuous flowering.
  • Resistance: This robust plant resists deer and rabbits very well.

Uses

  • Types of Use: It is a plant of choice for filling spaces at the front of a border, in mass plantings, or as a groundcover. Its spreading nature makes it magnificent in hanging baskets, window boxes, and large containers.
  • Ornamental Features: Its main asset is its ability to offer bright, constant colour for months. Its luminous flowers catch the eye and pair well with almost all other perennials, especially those with yellow foliage or flowers.

Care

  • Fertilizing: It is not very demanding. A spring application of compost or a balanced fertilizer is enough for the whole season.
  • Pruning: Its maintenance is minimal. Since its flowers are sterile, it is not necessary to deadhead for it to continue blooming.
  • Planting: Plant it in a location where it will have enough space to spread out.
