The 'Halcyon' Hosta is widely considered the gold standard for medium-sized blue hostas. It features solid, unvariegated foliage of a deep, pure steel blue. Its thick texture and consistent growth habit make it a perfect foundation plant for any shade garden. This robust variety is celebrated for holding its blue colouration much longer into the summer than most other varieties in its category.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: Leaves are an intense, uniform steel blue. The finish is matte and covered in a thick, waxy bloom that provides its unique colour.
  • Flowering / Fruit / Stems: Produces greyish-lavender bell-shaped flowers held on bluish stems in mid-summer.
  • Light: Prefers full shade to partial shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun to preserve the blue colour.
  • Habit: Forms a dense, wide, and very regular mound.
  • Growth: Slow to medium growth rate. Reaches approximately 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 inches) in height.
  • Soil: Thrives in rich, loose, and moist soil.
  • Temperature: Exceptionally hardy (Zone 3), ideal for northern climates.
  • Resistances: Renowned for its very high slug resistance due to the thickness of its leaves.

Use

  • Types of use: Perfect as a contrast plant to highlight gold or chartreuse foliage.
  • Decorative advantages: Brings a sense of calm and coolness to the garden with its icy tones and impeccable structure.

Maintenance

  • Watering: Requires consistently moist but well-drained soil. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  • Fertilization: An application of organic matter (compost) in the spring is recommended.
  • Pruning: Clean up dead leaves in early spring before new growth appears.
  • Planting: Allow about 75 cm (30 inches) between plants for full development.
  • Winter Protection: Very cold-hardy; it does not require specific winter protection once established.
