Inject a dynamic display of changing colours into your shaded garden features with this spectacular coral bells variety from the CITY™ series. It stands out with extraordinary foliage that constantly evolves through the seasons, shifting from terracotta red to warm amber and finishing as a rich cinnamon brown. Its unique ability to produce airy white bell-shaped flowers continuously over many months makes it a remarkable choice to structure borders and liven up your container arrangements.
Characteristics
- Foliage : Semi-evergreen, rounded leaves deploy a striking gradient of warm tones, shifting between coral red, amber, and cinnamon. This compact mound retains its intense colouration and impeccable structure from spring right through to winter.
- Blooms / Fruit / Stems : Slender, upright stems proudly hold airy clusters of small, white bell-shaped flowers, delivering a bright contrast and continuous visual interest from late spring until early autumn.
- Light : Provide a spot in partial shade to full shade. It tolerates morning sun well, which beautifully enhances the brilliance of its coppery hues.
- Habit : Its bushy, compact, and naturally rounded silhouette forms a dense, uniform, and very neat mound of foliage.
- Growth : This perennial grows at a moderate pace, quickly forming a tightly structured and well-balanced clump.
- Soil : Plant in soil rich in organic matter, loose, and moist, but providing absolutely impeccable drainage to safeguard its roots.
- Temperature : It demonstrates excellent hardiness, easily withstanding the rigours of zone 4.
- Resistance : It effectively resists common foliage diseases and tolerates the presence of white-tailed deer as well as hares and rabbits.
Use
- Types of use : Structure colourful borders along pathways, illuminate shaded woodland gardens in mass plantings, or grow it as a Thriller at the centre of a large container on the terrace or balcony.
- Ornamental benefits : It provides a massive visual impact thanks to its chromatic mutations and enlivens dark areas with its long-lasting, contrasting white blooms.
Maintenance
- Watering : Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist during the weeks following planting. Allow the soil surface to dry out slightly between waterings once the root system is fully established.
- Fertilizing : Apply a layer of rich compost in spring or feed with a balanced granular fertilizer early in the season to support its development.
- Pruning : Clean the plant in early spring by removing any winter-damaged leaves. Cut back spent flower stems to their base regularly to stimulate the ongoing emergence of new buds.
- Planting : Install the root ball level with the ground without burying the crown to prevent rot, while keeping the required spacing between plants.
- Winter Protection : Apply a mulch of shredded leaves around the base of the plant in late autumn to minimize the effects of frost-heaving.
