Available Varieties (subject to availability)

  • Charlotte (Fragaria × ananassa 'Charlotte'): A highly prized everbearing strawberry known for its sweet fruit and wild strawberry scent. It produces continuously from June until frost.
  • Jewell (Fragaria × ananassa 'Jewel'): The queen of mid-season. This June-bearing strawberry offers a massive, concentrated harvest of large, firm berries, perfect for preserves and freezing.
  • Delizz (Fragaria × ananassa 'Delizz'): An award-winning compact everbearing variety specifically designed for pots and planters. Its fruit is borne above the foliage for easy picking.

Characteristics

  • Versatility: These varieties perform exceptionally well in traditional vegetable gardens as well as in raised beds, window boxes, or hanging baskets.
  • Light: Full sun (6 to 8 hours daily) is required for all varieties. Ample exposure ensures sweet flavour and intense berry colouration.
  • Fruiting: Offers a massive early-summer harvest (Jewell) or continuous production from June until frost (Charlotte and Delizz).
  • Hardiness: Superior cold hardiness (Zone 3). Winter survival depends on protection techniques specific to your planting method (ground or pot).

In-Ground Gardening

Ideal for gardens and vegetable patches, this method allows plants to thrive and create a productive carpet.

  • Soil and Planting: Use rich, well-drained soil. Never bury the crown (base of the stems). Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart.
  • Fertilization: Incorporate mature compost or a biological granular small-fruit fertilizer at planting time. Apply a balanced fertilizer every early spring.
  • Maintenance: Use straw mulch to keep berries clean. Water regularly at the base to maintain consistent moisture.
  • Winter Protection: Once the ground has frozen, cover plants with 10 cm of straw to protect them from freeze-thaw cycles.

Container, Planter, and Hanging Basket Gardening

Perfect for balconies and patios, container gardening keeps your fresh strawberries within arm's reach all summer.

  • Containers and Potting Mix: Use pots at least 20 cm deep with drainage holes. Choose a premium potting mix high in organic matter.
  • Fertilization: Because nutrients leach quickly, apply a liquid biological small-fruit fertilizer every two weeks, preferably high in potassium.
  • Watering: Pots dry out fast in mid-summer. Daily watering is often necessary; the soil should remain moist but never waterlogged.
  • Winter Protection: In containers, roots are more vulnerable to hard frost. In the fall, either transplant them into the ground or move the container to a cool, dark place (like an unheated garage) after the first frost.
