Sunlight and Soil
- Panicle hydrangeas: Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun daily) to maximize vibrant pink and red fall tones.
- Smooth hydrangeas: Perform best in partial shade to full sun provided the soil stays evenly moist.
- Soil: Plant in well-drained, organic-rich soil. Soil pH does not alter the flower colour of these two species.
Watering and Mulching
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season and during hot dry spells. Apply a 5 to 7 cm layer of bark mulch around the root zone to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds.
Fertilization
Top-dress with organic compost each spring or apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen blends that encourage leafy growth over flower buds.
